Teaching
Sound has a relationship with silence that parallels the relationship between life and death, and the inevitability of death frames the lives we live. Making music, crafting vibrations in the space that lingers just above the silence, is a practice for living a meaningful life in the time we have. Good teaching is not about a product, but rather a way of being in the world that draws on the natural curiosity and imagination of childhood, and from that constructs a model for lifelong learning. The arts are particularly well-suited for the kind of subjective experience that puts us in touch with multiple meanings, that equips us with the kind of unquantifiable skills that prepare us to live in a complex and changing world, that exposes us to the challenging ethical dilemmas that we face in our daily routines, that helps us develop the open-mindedness to live the most deliberate and joyful lives that we can for ourselves and our communities.
